5 Ways to Start Fresh This Summer

January 1 isn’t the only time to reset and renew. With the new season upon us, it’s an ideal time to refocus on what matters most to you. Here are five ways you can start fresh this summer.

1. Reflect on Last Season’s Successes

Whether you prefer to journal, meditate, or even go for a walk outside to clear your head, take some time to think about what you’ve accomplished so far this year. It doesn’t have to be anything huge— in fact, motivational experts like Mel Robbins teach us to revel in tiny successes each and every day to keep our spirits high.

Find something positive in your life (and yes, it could be that you got up out of bed this morning without hitting snooze!), and get ready to create more of it.

2  Revise Your Goals

There’s a reason so many January resolutions go unfulfilled; many of them are unrealistic. It’s hard to go from couch potato to a gym rat, for example, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give up on improving your overall health and well-being.

A seasonal check-in is a great way to reignite your energy and passion, as well as tweak your personal goals into something that’s more doable for you to at your preferred pace. For example, maybe you’ve fallen off on your commitment to training for that end-of-year marathon, but that doesn’t mean you can’t train for a 5K coming up this summer.

3. Start One New Habit

…Not a dozen habits, not even two—just one. Experts say that focusing on one habit sets us up for greater success, and it motivates us to take on other new habits with more ease in the future.

If you want to read 100 books this year, for example, that’s a great goal. But how about starting out with reading 20 minutes a day? A daily reading habit will increase your reading speed. Maybe you won’t get to 100 books read this year, but the habit of reading is formed. Once you’ve successfully adopted one habit, whatever it might be, you’ll feel confident to take on more.

4. Create a Seasonal Bucket List

You might have a lot of things you want to see and do in your lifetime. But what about checking something off that list within the next three months? Perhaps you need more time to save up for your trip-of-a-lifetime to Greece, where you plan to ride a jet ski around Santorini. That’s fine, but how about learning to ride one this summer at a local lake or beach? Maybe now’s the time to download a language learning app and get to work on your Greek? Both are doable within the season. It’s fine to dream about the future, but don’t forget there’s plenty of living to be done right now.

5.  Declutter

Now that you’ve done the work to get motivated so you can do more in the new season, give yourself more room to do it all—literally. The warmer weather is here, so now’s the time to clear out your closet of all your warm-weather gear and make some piles for donation to a local shelter. Do you have a stack of magazines you’ve been meaning to go through? Take an hour to leaf through some of them, then put them in the recycling pile. Whatever it is that’s been cluttering up your home, take some time now to bid it good riddance.
